BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

An equatorial dial like this is the easiest type of sundial to construct. The hours are inscribed on a semicircular band which is in the plane of the equator and the gnomon is parallel with the axis of the Earth. The huge arc the Sun describes across the sky is mirrored by the small arc of the hour band so that as the Sun moves 15 degrees every hour so its shadow also moves 15 degrees , i.e. All the hour divisions are equal, unlike those on a vertical or horizontal dial. The dial was presented to the town by No 1 Army Commando to commemorate their 50th anniversary in 1991. It is made of bronze and steel and its baseplate is in the shape of a commando beret. It stands on the square top of a cylindrical pedestal. The hours VI - VI are shown, divided into halves and quarters, and the gnomon is in the form of a sword. It measures 270mm in diameter.
