BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Castle Howard House (1), Castle Howard

This dark patinated iron dial in Lady Cecilia’s Rose Garden has an ornately pierced brass or bronze gnomon arranged diagonally on the plate, with an unusual tapering swan-necked supporter at the north end. The south corner of the plate is damaged. The dial shows 4am to 8pm in 30, 15 min and 5 marks, with a noon gap, the numerals viewed from inside the dial, using XII and IIII. The central part of the plate is filled with a 32-point compass rose, labelled to ’S by W’ etc. The dial stands on an ornate double-bulbous square section pedestal on a three step square plinth. There is evidence of a three hole dial fixing and therefore the pedestal is presumed to be older than the dial. The dial may have been turned to align to BST!
