BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Edenfield Parish Church, Edenfield

There are unresolved questions about this fine dial: its carving is remarkably fresh for a dial which is dated 1826, and it may be a restoration. It features upright numerals VI - XII - IV - VI, with half and quarter hour marks and longer hour lines leading to a semicircle around the gnomon root. Inside the semicircle with the date is the the motto: ’Tempus edax rerum est’ (Time is the devourer of all things). Across the top is inscribed: ’T Aitken. (Lat 53 57 N) Cl Warden’. The dial plate is supported by four sturdy but inelegant iron dogs. There is a small iron bracket with a hole near the centre of the top side, whose purpose is not clear. The bar gnomon has an elegant ’S’ supporter.
