BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

The dial is at the south subway entrance. The date MDLXXXVIII across the top of this dial and the date 1988 when this dial was installed are 400 years apart showing that it is commemorating an anniversary of the defeat of the Spanish Armada. The dial was designed by C.St.H.Daniel and made by Edward Pond from ceramic tiles with a stainless steel gnomon. It shows 6am to 6pm divided into half hours by dots. In the centre is the city coat of arms, while across the bottom is the commonest of all sundial mottoes, "Tempus Fugit". The dial measures 1067mmh x 1220mmw.
