Dial in Northumberland

Now (July 2013) located in a wall at the Physic Garden. The photos from 1885 were elsewhere at Herterton House. A kneeling moustachio’d figurine with long flowing locks, wearing a Tam o’ Shanter. Bowl scaphe S dial, also half-cylinder scaphe E & W dials, all with gnomons intact. The style is 16th century, but the head is of different stone and more recent. It was bought from an antique dealer in the Borders, painted in strong colours. Origin possibly connected with the Earls of Montrose. Owner purchased from dealer in the Borders.
