BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Derbyshire

This is a fine modern dial, dedicated to the memory of Roy Bubb, 1934-88. It is everything that a good sundial should be, readable, accurate, shows the Equation of Time thus allowing clock time to be determined, the latitude and longitude of Bakewell, a compass rose and on the side of the thick gnomon is engraved the direction of Polaris, the pole star. You will see that mid day is marked by two lines, this is called a ’noon gap’ and is to allow for the thickness of the gnomon. Mottoes in spandrels read: "Omnia Pulchra, Hora Transit, Reditura Nunquam, Spectate Omni Hora". The plinth is excellent, and the whole graces the garden. It is a complete work of art, and like all good works of art, it is signed by the maker, JMC.
