BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St Thomas a Becket Church, Salisbury

The dial is on the tower. There is a semi-circular notch nodus to the gnomon, which has an S-shaped supporter. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, Salisbury Vol 1, p31 gives the date, and the Wilts Record Society 1896, p341, says the dial was painted. The dial is visible in a J Lyons (1745) engraving of the church. A James reports (2000) that there was an earlier direct west dial on the adjacent face of the tower - its gnomon is visible in a (c1900) picture hanging in Snell’s tearooms next door! Careful examination shows nothing now. [The tearoom, and picture, were gone by 2010.]
