BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

The crouching negro is not contemporary with the dial. It was cast by Van Ost (?Nost) after c1720 and the whole was previously in the garden of Clement’s Inn (a lesser Inn of Chancery). It was possibly donated by Viscount Clare in 1767/76. When Clement’s Inn was abolished the statue was sold to a private buyer in 1884, and it was donated to the Inner Temple in 1891 by a Mr Holmes. The dial shows IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, read from the outside, with a noon gap, divided to 30, 15 and 7.5 minutes, and then in Arabic tens to 1 minute marks. There is an EoT ’Watch too slow/ Watch too fast’ ring. (The dial does not use the conventional Watch faster/slower phrasing).
