BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
This is a good bronze horizontal dial dating from the 19th century showing the usual hours from IV to VIII. It has a 16-point compass rose in the centre and an Equation of Time scale. It is marked with the latitude 50° 30’ North which is reasonably correct for this location. The maker’s name is given as G & C.W.Dixey of London but the dial bears a remarkable resemblance to those made by Troughton & Simms (an example is to be found at St Michael’s Mount). It is possible that the Dixeys bought dials from Troughton and Simms but retailed them under their own name, a not uncommon practice.
