BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Devon

It appears that this aluminium dial was designed for an existing octagonal plinth which is not aligned exactly North- South. Hence the gnomon is not symmetrically located on the dial plate. It has aligned Roman hour numerals, read from outside, IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, with noon gap. Full length hour lines, not through the numerals, and 30 and 10 minute marks. An inscription on the North side of the plate says ’Solar Time’ while on the South is inscribed, ’PRESENTED TO SIDMOUTH AD 1982 BY THE SID VALE ASSOCIATION’; E ’LATITUDE 50 40 40 N’; W ’LONGITUDE 3 14 18 W’. The dial measures 250mm across.
