BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Graythwaite Hall, Newby Bridge

The dial is in the Rose Garden, on a circular bulbous red sandstone plinth, 1130 high, on a square foot standing on two shallow circular steps. On the bottom step (NE side) is ’Noiseless falls the foot of time’, and on the SW side ’Which only treads on Flowers’. The dial bears the motto ’Watch and Pray’ on the N side and ’Time Steals away’ on the S. Roman hour numerals for 4am to 8pm, with a noon gap and divided to 30, 15, 10 and 5 minutes. There is a 16-point compass rose and an EOT scale. The name of the maker is taken from the Hall handout but this dial may be ’imported’ since its gnomon angle is definitely 52 degs and not 54.
