BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Brodick Castle [NT] (2), Isle of Arran

The dial is in the Walled Garden, just to the east of the castle. The motto reads ’Tempus Fugit’ and there is an 8-point labelled compass rose. Numerals are read from outside, IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, divided to 30 and 15 mins, with a split noon line. The pierced gnomon is set on a slender baluster pedestal with acanthus décor, circular capital and three step circular base. The pedestal base commemorates Mary Louise Douglas-Hamilton and her husband James, 6th Duke of Montrose. Mary, who succeeded James, died in 1957, so the dial may have been installed in the 1950s.
