The dial is located at the end of gardens facing the south front of the house, close to massive gates. The dial plate carries an engraving of the crest (three birds in a shield) of John Millar, who took over the house in 1716 and created the garden in the period 1718-1732. The dial is inscribed ’S Saunders Fecit’, and bears an 8-point compass rose and an Equation of Time scale. Noon is marked opposite hours for Rome (XI), Cairo (X), Moscow, Ispaham, Surrat, Peking, Mexico, N York, Barbados, Cape Farewell, Tenarif, and Dublin. The dial tells the time from 4am to 8pm. The gnomon is a very ornate pierced one. The dial is mounted on a stone octagonal baluster pedestal set on an octagonal plinth. In Oct 1999 the pedestal was damaged but subsequently repaired.
