BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Monkton Hall, Musselburgh

Modern or restored. The dial is mounted over the door of the house. A star at each top corner, a small shield shape top centre, and at each side a black carved figure (a lion?), crowned. Mottos read, in a semicircle around the gnomon root ’JAMAIS ARRIERE’ (the ’AM’ and the ’AR’ conjoined) and on a stone in the wall below the dial ’THROUGH STORM AND SUNSHINE LORD ABIDE WITH ME +’ (the ’TH’ amd the ’AB’ conjoined). Upright Arabic numerals 7am to 6pm, but with X, XI and XII. All furniture gilded with the exception of the two lion figures.
