BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
The dial is carved into the stonework on the south wall buttress, to the right of the doorway. The surrounding stone seems to have been painted darker so the dial plate may be the normal stone finish lightened slightly.
The dial shows 7am to 5pm using Roman numerals. A gilded patty cross is used for Noon and IIII for 4pm. The numerals are drawn upright but aligned with the hour lines.
Full hour lines run from gnomon root to edge of chapter ’ring’. There are inward pointing lines in the chapter ring for the half hours and short marks for the quarters.
The thin rod gnomon has a curved supporter and its origin is on the top border of the dial face.
This is one of three dials on the walls of the Cathedral.
