St Andrew’s Church, Isleham

The dial engraved into South porch stonework above the doorway. The face shows 6am to 5pm, in hours, using Roman numerals. A double bordered engraved rectangular outline (motto within) surrounds a vertically oriented elliptical dial. The outer ellipse holds the chapter ring and the next has the hour lines. The inner ellipse appears to be empty. Hour lines faintly engraved, with the numerals originally painted except for XII which is deeply engraved. The dial has appearance of being recently partially recut. The rod gnomon has two similar supporting rods in line directly below the origin. Motto reads: "Lux Umbra Dei", which can be translated as "Light is the Shadow of God" Ref BSS Bulletin 93.3 Oct 1993 p 20
