BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St John the Baptist Parish Church, Bodicote

Very large modern vertical south-facing dial high on the church walls. The metal dialplate has deeply scalloped edges. The metal numerals and hour lines are all riveted to it. The metal gnomon has invisible fixings. The dial shows only full hours, with hourlines and upright Roman numerals from 7am to 6pm. Unlike many churches, the nave runs due east-west and this wall faces due south. As expected then, the gnomon is in the vertical plane over the noon line. But it is clear that the hourlines are not accurately positioned. Most obviously, the 6pm line should be horizontal with a 6am line opposite it. More subtly, the 5pm line is also far too low and the noon line should be midway between 11am and 1pm but clearly is not. The gnomon is mounted on a fleur de lys device and is pierced in the form of the letters ’PS’.
