BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Lancashire

This sturdy bronze dial seems to be a reproduction of an 18th century original: it is not known whether the delineator and sculptor named ("John Baines Delineavit, James Dawson Sculpsit") are of the original or the copy. Inscriptions mention: "Rev’d Hugh Hornby, MA, Vicar. Churchwardens 1796 James Bains, James Lewtas (or Lewins), Rich’d Hornby, John Croft, John Miller". The motto is: "Our days upon earth are as a shadow"; also in the NW corner is inscribed: "Fugio, fuge", in the NE "Respice finem", SW "Memor leni" and in the SE "Fugit hora". The plinth is 1130 mm high, and springs from a two-stepped base, of which each step is 150 mm high. Roman hour numerals, aligned, show times VI - XII - IV - VI, with calibrations continuing for one hour each side of the range. Minutes shown are 30, 15 and five.
