BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Village centre, Melrose

This is a market cross type dial, set on a street island in the village. Only the south dial has any trace. The stump of a gnomon was visible in 1986, but no hour lines. Originally reported as having the figure of a dog on top. Set then on tall fluted column 12 ft high on two octagonal steps each 1-2 ft high. Now (2010) ’restored’, with an octagonal section column and the dial carved as a full clock face, with no gnomon. The ’dog’ has been re-carved as a unicorn, bearing a shield with a lion rampant, and possibly always was. Also now carved with the date 1645, and initials ’I E H’.
