Dial in Fife

This may be a conglomerate of different pieces. The shaft is of greyish, the rest of yellow stone. It is probably from Leuchars Castle, and was erected here in 1897. The structure stands diagonally on one square step and three spreading octagonal steps. It stands about 6 ft high. The obelisk-like column consists of : 1. A four-panel shaft with various-shape hollows in diamond-shaped frames. 2. A collar of polar hemi-cylinders and four-sided block above. 3. A 24-sided boss with all flat surfaces. 4. A polyhedron with 20 faces and four-sided block above. 5. A ball finial. There are dials on all available surfaces, and lines and numerals are visible. There are stumps of iron gnomons, some replaced by recent copper ones. Ref: A R Somerville, Proc Soc Antiq Scot, 117, 1987, "The Ancient Sundials of Scotland".
