Abbotsford House, Abbotsford

The Haliburton Dial. Originally at Dryburgh Abbey, removed to Nenthorn House, and gifted to Abbotsford in 1987, because of the connection between Walter Scott and the Haliburton family. Gatty suggests the date of 1640. Cube dial with N, S, E & W faces. Sloping top surmounted by a ball. Carved face at base of S gnomon. Upper sloping faces have arms of Campbells and Haliburtons. Lines and numerals are clear. Gnomons appear recent. Set on an octagonal stone column 4ft high on square step. A R Somerville, The Ancient Sundials of Scotland,1990.
