BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Holy Rood Parish Church, Woodeaton

Rectangular vertical dial on the buttress to the right of the porch. The dial has been formed by engraving hour lines and numerals on existing masonry. The gnomon is fixed in a joint between two stones. There are full length hour lines, half length half hours and short quarter hour lines from 6am to 6pm. The wall declines, perhaps 4 degrees, east of south, so the 6pm line is a little above horizontal, 6am a little below. There is a 5am line, well above horizontal and thus serving no real purpose. Our recorder notes that the substyle is, correctly for this wall declination, at about 11.30am but the gnomon is bent to the right (incorrectly) to bring the style (the upper edge) in line with noon. There is some evidence of Roman hour numerals (XI and III certainly) which may have been painted originally. The solid triangular sheet gnomon has a scalloped lower edge. The church is largely early thirteenth century but the dial is certainly not that old.
