BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
Vertical dial on an old market cross.
A print of 1842 shows the market cross, but the current dial dates from 1961. The dial declines slightly east of due south and shows 6am to 5pm in hours. The Roman hour numerals are upright. All lines and characters are elegantly engraved.
The strip gnomon is supported at its midpoint but free of the dial at the top (root).
Above the dial is inscribed (in capital Greek characters) "Alpha + Omega" and the restoration date. A crucifix is on the west side, a St Andrew’s cross and 2 fishes on the east and the motto: "Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord" is on the north.
There is a tradition for a sermon to be preached at the cross on Rogation Sunday.
