BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

This dial near the west entrance is known as the ’Prince Albert Victor Sundial’ and was erected to commemorate the opening of the International Exhibition of Industry, Science and Art by the Prince. It stands on a tall octagonal pillar bearing an octagonal capital engraved with a commemorative notice and other devices including a crown. Above that is an octagonal stone plate inscribed around the vertical edges ’TAK TENT OF TIME ERE TIME BE TINT’. The original armillary sphere on the top dated from 1886 and was much larger than today’s modern replacement. The current dial has Roman numerals pierced in the equatorial band, read from the outside. There were originally also four vertical dials facing the cardinal points half way up the pillar, showing Edinburgh time, 12’ 45" after GMT. Ref: BSS Bulletin 36(ii), 34-38 (June 2024)
