The dial is located in the south drive of the gardens. The dial plate is engraved with the motto ’Sine Lumine inane’. The time markings show 4am to 8pm in 30, 15, 10, 7.5, 5, & two offset 2 min rings which permit reading to an accuracy of 1 minute. The plate is also engraved with Fleurs de lys to mark the 30 min positions. Split noon. Interestingly IIII is used to mark the 4 o’clock point and an ’Equation of Nocturnal Days’ [Natural Days?] ring is included. The latitude marking is indecipherable. The dial carries the Maughan family crest with motto the ’Fors Non Mutat Genus’ translated as ’Circumstance does not change origin’ and the monogram ’TA’. The dial is mounted on a circular section baluster pedestal 1300mm tall which has a small square base, the whole mounted on two large circular steps. The dial may not have been made for Erddig.
