BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Buckinghamshire

A square horizontal dial, now kept indoors. There is a large compass rose in the centre of the dial and a further circle around the gnomon root from which hour lines radiate. They show 4am to 8pm in 30, 15 and 5 min marks. The Roman numerals, aligned with the hour lines and read from inside the dial, use XII at noon and IIII (not IV). The dial has a noon gap. The hour lines do not extend through the numerals. The maker’s inscription: ’H : Sutton fecit’ is in the chapter ring gap, and the date ’1637’ (or possibly 1657) is at the toe of the gnomon, both read from the north. Henry Sutton was one of the leading London instrument makers at that time. The gnomon has a floral piercing. The dial is currently set on an 18th century font.
