Dial in Buckinghamshire

Very fine horizontal dial just outside the church. The bronze dial has a very large and elaborately engraved 8 point compass rose in the centre. Then, in concentric circular chapter rings, hour and half hour lines, hour numerals and half hour diamonds, 15 and 5 minute divisions. The Roman numerals, from 4am to 8pm, are aligned with the shadow and read from outside the dial. They use IIII for 4am and XII at noon. An inscription on the dial reads "Rd. Bull, Isaac Hare Churchwardens 1771" The dial rests on square plate inscribed "Restored 1929 by Captain William Edward Bliss". This is mounted on a circular fluted column with square plinth and capital.
