Dial in Borders Region

The dial block is drum-shaped on the east, north and west sides and is mounted in a carved stone ’Basket of Fruit’ mounted on a squat bulging square plinth set on three octagonal steps. This is an atypical lectern dial, a facetted block with north-sloping top with equatorial dial (no star); the south-facing polar hemi-cylinder extends the whole length of the block; other surfaces are flat or with large shallow hollows east and west; the west hollow has a carved coiled serpent in it; dials on all available surfaces. Some hour lines and numerals are visible, There is a gnomon on the equatorial. Ref: A R Somerville, Proc Soc Antiq Scot, 117, 1987, "The Ancient Sundials of Scotland", p24 (B11).
