BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
The foot of the gnomon is at the centre of the dial. Hours are IV - XII - IV - VIII, read from inside, with full length hour lines (except where crossed by inscriptions) and no subdivisions. To the south of the gnomon we read: "Horas non numero nisi serenas", and below that "Domi Acaciarum / in Rundehaia / AD 1905 / Long 1 32 Lat 53 48 / Sept 19 & Dec 12 + 0". (The dial shows approximately clock time on Sept 19 and Dec 12.)
Around the edge is: "Sic fluit occulti sic multas decrepit aetas Sic venit ad finem quid-quid in orbe manet. Heu heu praeteritum non est revocabile tempus. Heu propius tacito mors venit ipsa pede". The verse is taken from a clock in the church of Sta Maria Novella (see Gatty 1900 p 175, with translation).
On the gnomon is "Hugo Luptonus et Ella Uxor Sua Fecere" and the angles 53 48 & 36 12 (latitude and colatitude). Around the outer edge is a scale for the EoT plus 6 mins longitude adjustment with one reading for each month, eg "Jany + 15 Feb + 20 Mar + 15 " etc. (Oct and Nov seem to be shown as +8 and +9 but should be -8 and -9.)
Circular stone column.
Hugh Lupton (1861-1947) married Isabella Simey (1863-1932). He was a businessman, and became Lord Mayor of Leeds in 1926.
