BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial is located in the gardens. Roman numerals, scale not identified other than that it shows half and quarter hours. 8-point compass rose in centre of dial labelled to NE etc, and above that on each side ’Brown Chester’. In the lower half the motto and date: ’Time passeth and speketh not / amende today and slack not / Anno Dom 1710’. The meridian ring is topped with a small casting of a scaled beast, possibly a dolphin, with a leafy tail. The angle of the gnomon to the base plate is 54 deg +/- 0.5 deg suggesting that the dial may have been designed for a different location [not Chester which is at 53° 11’]. Ornate stone pedestal, clear line delineates lichen and non-lichen areas suggesting that there may have previously been something else on it. Reported to be similar to dials in Cambridge and Polewe Scotland all with different dates and makers. Are they fakes? One of two dials at this establishment - see SRN 6056. The 1905 postcard shows the current pedestal but with an earlier horizontal dial.
