St Mary’s Parish Church (2), Ottery St Mary

When Mrs Crowley drew this dial in 1960 she described its position as "High over the Sth Porch" but it is in fact on a buttress. She drew a partial date "182-" on a stone below it but that is no longer evident. It is a tall ,narrow (760mm x 380mm) break arch dial and it is possible that a motto was once legible in the arch but all is blank now. It declines 6° East and shows VII - V divided into halves, quarters and intervals of 7 1/2 minutes. A crescent shaped device lies below the gnomon root. The initials BB, IS in bottom left corner and IB in the bottom right are followed by W for Warden.Rectangular section gnomon with pointed end and very curved ’S’ shaped supporter. On her drawing, Mrs Crowley notes, "Scratch dial" but there is no sign of one nor is there any mention of one in the very good church history booklet. There is however an horological wonder inside the church where Grandison’s astronomical; clock can be seen in the South transept.
