BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St Catherine’s Church, Whitestone

Near the church porch is this large horizontal stone sundial; the only horizontal dial to be drawn in Mrs Crowley’s Devon sketchbooks. It is an octagon measuring 900mm across and it shows 4- V - VII-8 divided into halves and quarters. It has the motto ’Cito pede praeterit hora’ (The hour passes with swift foot). Although much is now illegible, Mrs Crowley drew a lot more detail than can be seen today and we may wonder how much of it is accurate. Round the periphery of the octagon she placed 31 compass points though many of these are nonsensical (NWSW, NEEN etc) and drew also a globe, a compass rose, a moon and what looks like a protractor.
