Dial in Gloucestershire

This memorial dial is on a square section bulbous pedestal 500 sq & 1000h on a square plinth, in the lower graveyard to the east of the church. The motto (on a Coat of Arms) reads: ’Firmum in Vita Nihil’ (Nothing in life is certain). The inscription reads: ’O’er every hour that’s brightest a shadow creeps, and he whose laugh is lightest, full often weeps. O look we for tomorrow, which hath no night, where love is every sorrow, in God’s own light’. The poem is signed ’S. E. Bartleet, St. Mary le Crypt Rectory, Gloucester’. The memorial sundial was dedicated by the Bishop of Gloucester on 26th September, 1917. There is an 8-point compass rose, and the Lat and Long are shown. The hours are IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, read from the outside, with a noon gap, and divided to 30, 15, and 5 min intervals. Half hours are marked by a fleur de lys.
