This is an equatorial dial marked on both sides for summer and winter. It has concentric circles for hours, minutes, date, and compass points indicating port establishments for coastal ports. Extra space filled with Latin and English inscriptions, maker’s name, date etc. Holes indicate where a volvelle or sighting arm would have been fixed for use as a moon dial and tide predictor. The dial is originally from Whithorn, Wigtownshire. Ref: A R Somerville, Proc Soc Antiq Scot, 117, 1987, "The Ancient Sundials of Scotland", p27 (B14).
