BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Old Moot Hall, Aldeburgh

The dial shows the date 1650 at the lower edge, but it is a replica of the original dial of that date. There was a major programme of restoration of the Moot Hall in 1855, and the present dial may date from then. It is is probably made of wood, perhaps with some plaster elements for the detailing. It is mounted on the brickwork of a chimney breast, and declines 13 degrees west of south. It indicates the hours from 7am to 6pm, shown with upright gilded Roman numerals, using IV for 4pm. It has a black time scale on a white background with the hour lines radiating from a golden sun-burst around the gnomon origin. Half and most quarter hours are also indicated. Traces remain of two concentric circles on the dial face, possibly the remains of a previous decoration. At the upper edge of the dial is a broken-arched pediment with a small enclosed finial, and below is the motto: ’Horas Non Numero Nisi Serenas’. The metal gnomon rod has a pointed end and is supported by a single strut.
