BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Buttercross, Witney

Circular vertical south-facing dial on south side of clock turret. The clock turret was added to the ancient buttercross marketplace in 1683. Its four sides have two clockfaces and, on the south side, a sundial. The dial, which has recently been restored, has full length black painted hour lines from 6am to 6pm. The inner circular chapter ring has gilded Roman numerals, aligned with the hour lines and read from outside the dial. They have IIII at 4pm and XII at noon. An outer ring has half and quarter hour marks. Above the dial is a gilded scroll ornament. The whole dial is painted with a pale blue ground. The gnomon is a simple finger-pointed strip with a curly ’S’-shaped supporter. It is quite thin and there is no noon gap.
