BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
An electric lamp has been positioned on the church porch so that it prevents a clear view of the slate sundial above it. It is a declining dial showing the hours VI - V divided into halves and quarters. There is a sun face surrounding the gnomon root and this is placed in such a way that its upper segment has to give way to the motto across the top of the dial plate. The motto reads "Pereunt et Imputantur" (They perish and are reckoned against us). This comes from Martial. (Epigrammata V. Xx) where the whole passage reads, "....... Bonosque Soles effugere atque abire sentit qui nobis pereunt et imptantur" (And he feels the good days are flitting and passing away, our days that perish and are scored to our account). The dial is in good condition and measures 610mm square.
