BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St Buryan’s Church, St Buryan

On the porch of what Pevsner describes as "one of the proudest churches of West Cornwall" is a dial to match it. Its one fault is that the engraver, as so often happens, has not marked out his intended lettering first and has had to complete the motto by resorting to superscript. Otherwise the dial is of a quality which is reminiscent of the Berry family in Devon. It declines west and shows the time by means of an ornate gnomon. It has declination lines marked by small zodiacal signs which tell us the time of year and another set of lines which indicate the direction from which the sun is shining. Points on these two sets of lines are marked by the shadow of a notch (the ’nodus’) on the gnomon. The dedication has also been given as to St Berian or St Buriana. Ref: Gatty 1900, p 365, where she tells us that the dial was removed in 1874 and only restored to its place in 1899.
