BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Penrose Almshouses, Barnstaple

Erected in 1627 over the main entrance of the almshouses in memory of their founder, John Penrose, this dial has now become almost indecipherable. No numerals remain but a few hour lines can still be seen. It has a solid gnomon, the under edge of which is serrated so as to avoid a second straight line shadow which might confuse the observer. It declines West and we might conjecture that it could have shown the hours VII to VII.
