BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St Giles’ Church, Little Torrington

A break-arch dial on a rectangular slate is a very common design and this example on the church porch follows the pattern. The date 1771 is inscribed in the arch and below it the motto,"Fugit irreparabile tempus". This is a quotation from Virgil (Georgics III, 284-5) where the full passage runs, "Sed fugit interea, fugit irreparabile tempus, Singula dum capti circumvectamur amore" (But meanwhile Time flies, Time flies irretrievably, while we, love stricken, dwell on each thing). As so often happens, the engraver has misjudged the spacing of the letters so that the final S lies outside the border of the dial and is hidden by a clamp. The dial declines East and shows the hours VI - V divided into halves and quarters. It measures 380mmw x 610mmh.
