BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Fountains Hall, Fountains Abbey, nr Ripon

Motto reads: "Sic Transit Gloria Mundi". Illustration from Gatty 1900, p 399 and one from Jekyll, Garden Ornament, 1918. The latter shows the gnomon support as it is today, but with the addition of an infill pierced sheet with what appears to be an initial ’M’ and a date ’1706’. Vertical Roman numerals VI - XII - IIII - VI. Hour lines to small semicircle around gnomon root, half and quarter divisions. Iron strip gnomon with vertical support and ’S’ shaped support to gnomon tip; ’S’ support also has curved supports to either side (added since Gatty’s illustration). Set into stonework above entrance doorway into Fountains Hall. Guide notes indicate Fountains Hall dated 1597-1604.
