BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St Oswald in Lee Church, Wall

The church is visible from the B6318 road where stands a large wooden cross. This is the site of the Battle of Heavenfield, 634AD, where King Oswald of Northumbria was the victor. The dial stands on a ledge on the south wall and is protected by an overhang. It appears to be contemporary with the 18th century rebuild of the church. A dialist commends the flavour of the mushrooms that grow in this graveyard. BSS accepts no liability however! Once and perhaps still, the church was cared for by the Girl Guides. The date is in the lower left and right corners, and across the top is possibly ’WH HR RS’, but uncertain.
