BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Cumbria

The dial is situated to south west of the church porch amid high bushes. It shows 4am to 8pm, divided to half and quarter hours. The gnomon is a solid right triangular sheet set at an angle of 30 degrees, being an obvious later addition. The dial is set on a cylindrical column carved with pine cones in relief, and with a lotus capital having 16 petals. A motto on the plinth reads: ’Do / today’s / work / today’. The church was rebuilt by Sarah Losh in 1840-1842, and she may well have designed the sundial also, or at least its pedestal. There is a full sized replica of the Bewcastle Cross (SRN 0390) in the churchyard.
