Beamish Museum, Stanley

Located in park area of the ’Town’ in front garden of the ’Solicitor’s House’. Had a simple but elegant solid gnomon with a stud at each end of its base. 8-point compass rose labelled to NW etc, surrounded by a circular scale divided to degrees, and labelled every 10. IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, with noon gap, read from outside and divided in 5, 10, 15 and 30 mins. Inscribed ’Henry Smith, Newcastle’, and above that, almost illegible now through zealous polishing, ’Lattitude (sic) . . . . ’ and just possible ’Magnetic . . . . . . .’. Gnomon reported missing in 1992.
