BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Church, Whicham nr Millom

The dial was on the south side of the church, to the right of the door. It was reported by RS (14.1.00) to have been stolen, probably at the same time as the Corney and Whitbeck dials. There is an arc on the dial plate bisected by the gnomon and calibrated in degrees, with 40, 60 and 80 marked. This could show the azimuth of the sun but would need a vertical gnomon and there is no sign that such was ever in place. Shows 4am to 8pm in 30, 15, 10, and 5 min intervals, using Roman numerals read from the inside, using IIII and XII, and with a noon gap. Mounted on a tall slender red octagonal section pedestal with octagonal top and square plinth. [The dial came up for auction by Nicholson’s of Haslemere, 10th April 2024.]
