Dial in Yorkshire (S)

The main dial is circular at the north end of the stone. Around the N, E and W edges of the stone, are two dials showing the time in ’Boston in New England’, and inside that a dial showing time in ’Constaninople’ . The main dial has Roman numerals, the other two dials are in Arabic. There are seven declination lines, some have numbers but the numbers do not seem to be declination, or months or zodiac signs - possibly altitude? Inscription SD 1736. Lat. 53 50. Appears to be some antique scratched graffiti. Inscribed ’I MO..SON FECIT’ - possibly Molson. The dial was reported stolen Mon 14 December 1998. Curator Dr Jane Whittaker (01226 790270). Sold at Christies for £2,530, 8 June 1999, see BSS Bulletin Oct 99 p111/2. It was later recovered and is now (2012) in the cellars at Cannon Hall.
