BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St James’ Church, Parkham

The slate dial on the porch is a 610mm square lozenge with a circular dial in the centre. The slate was once coloured deep blue but only faint traces of this now persist. The gilding of the motto, sun circle and numerals has survived better. At the top is a motto, ’Umbra Sumus’ (We are a Shadow) followed by the date 1731. The dial declines East and shows 6am to 4pm with a cross at noon. There are no hour lines but decorative marks lie between the numerals. There are oblique lines across the centre of the dial but these do not seem to have any gnomonic function.
