BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St Mary’s Church, Diptford

You walk to the porch on a path which is actually the local bedrock to see this dial which is mounted somewhat askew. It is a decorative dial and quite legible considering the year (1694) it displays in the central finial at the top. The two smaller finials contain the initials PEW (the E almost hidden by a fixing clamp) and TKW,who were presumably the churchwardens (the letter W may have stood for ’warden’). A rose is carved below the right hand finial and the rest of the space above the dial plate is occupied by the motto, "As time and houres paseth away so douth the life of man decay". The dial declines 14° East and shows the hours VI - IV divided into halves by lines bearing a fleur d lys ,and into quarters. It is similar to dials at South Brent, North Hush and Woodleigh and all may have been made by the same craftsman. The dial measures 610mmh x 460mmw.
