BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Parish Church of St Augustine, Heanton Punchardon

The church commands wide views over the Taw estuary and provides a fine site for a fine dial. This is canted East on the church porch and carries, as if we needed them, the names Jno & Thos Berry. In the top corners are winged heads and the date,1795, is inscribed between them. The root of the gnomon lies within a shield bearing the coat of arms of the Bassett family who lived at Heanton Court and their motto,""Bene agere ac laetare" can be translated as Act Rightly and Rejoice. It shows the hours VI to VI divided into halves by lines each having a fleur-de-lys, and into quarters. A decorative motif indicates noon. The dial measures 500mw x 600mmh. The name of the village is derived from the Punchardon family who lived here in the 11th century.
