BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
In the records of the British Sundial Society this dial appears twice: once as as a sundial and once as a mass dial. It is to be found carved in the stonework of the rood stair turret just short of 2 metres above ground level and measures 150mm dia. The hour lines are for the most part equally spaced and the central hole is 95mm deep and undoubtedly horizontal. Mrs Crowley drew the dial in 1953 and was able to see the now nearly illegible inscription at the top of the dial "Anno Domini 1586". She also mentions that in "Notes and Queries" it was recorded that there were intials ’D’ and ’F’ at either side but only the former is still visible. It seems likely that what we see today started life as a mass dial and was subsequently modified by the addition of numerals VI to VI to try to convert it into a sundial.
